Try This: Lion’s Breath

Breathwork can help ease anxiety or nervousness, improve focus and attention, and can help regulate the nervous system. Lion’s breath, is one of my favorite breathwork techniques because it feels so powerful and leaves me feeling energized and empowered. It also helps to stretch the muscles in your face, neck, and throat in order to relieve tension/tightness and improve circulation in these areas.

To give you a little bit of the background behind Lion’s breath, this technique is a form of pranayama (yoga breathing practice). Lion’s breath is also closely associated with helping to clear your throat chakra. The Throat chakra is closely linked to themes of communication, using your voice, openness, and expression.

Try it out and notice what your experience is:

 ➤ Find a comfortable position

Before you get started, find a position that feels most comfortable for you and where you can focus your gaze toward the sky. Take a moment just to settle into this position.

 ➤ Inhale

Inhale through your nose and with your mouth closed

➤ Open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue curling it down toward your chin

 ➤ Exhale

As you exhale, forcefully make a “ha” sound. Let it all out and it’s okay to get loud.

  ➤ Relax

Take a moment to relax your face and return to a few normal breaths before doing another lion’s breath
